A Weekend in Damascus

Last night we drove from Greensboro to Statesville and stayed there at Derrick's farm house. I slept horribly not falling asleep until about four and waking up at 10 a.m., we slowly got ready and headed out for Damascus.
We got to Damascus at about 1 p.m and found a spot to set up in the tent city were hundreds of other hikers are camping for trail days. There are a lot of interesting people to say the least. It rained for about half an hour and we went and checked out all the vendors set up at the event.
We just had some pork sandwiches, green beans, and potato salad. Our tent is setup right next to a pretty sweet river, its so loud. It is about 6 p.m., were laying in the tent, ready for bed, and even more ready to hike. Tomorrow Cathrine and I are walking to the shuttle Shack so we can rent some bikes and ride the Virginia Creeper Trail.

Once again I did not sleep well last night. In between the loudness and craziness of the trail days party and bonfires, lack of food, and the fact that I lost my wallet earlier in the day- I had a lot going against me drifting off to sleep.
I was indeed warm all night even though I've decided against carrying a sleeping bag through the summer months until we get to New Hampshire. Right now I'm just using a sleeping bag liner and a fleece blanket as backup. This system saves on weight and frees my pack up for more of other things, like food!
For breakfast we had some eggs that I boiled the day before, delicious as always. Once we had brushed our teeth, Cathrine and I headed to the Shuttle Shack where rented a couple of bikes.
Instead of taking the van we figured we have bikes, let's ride em. So we passed on the shuttle up White Top Mountain and began on our trek of 17 miles of uphill. About halfway up, we stopped at The Creeper Trail Cafe and had some tasty burgers. In total it took about two and a half hours to bike to the top of the trail. When we got to the top, hung out for a little bit, and made our way back down to Damascus. Are biking total was 34 miles for the day.
When we got back in town, we checked the lost and founds around town for the 50th time for my wallet, no luck. We went to the town's library and sat on the porch, ate pork sandwiches while we charged our phones so we can have some battery life for the next 9 days that we spend in the woods (if we need it)
An eventful day, I suspect I will sleep a lot better tonight. Tomorrow Thomas is coming to meet up with us and we will finally get a start on the Appalachian Trail! (Hopefully our legs won't be too sore)
