Days 75-79

Our journey up to Millinocket Maine from Delaware Water Gap. On our way to continue our hike, southbound from Mt. Katahdin

Day 75

This morning while Cathrine got a shower, I walked down the street to the Edge of the Woods Outfitter to pick up a package that my mother had sent us. She sent us brownies and other goodies and our down jackets so we'll have them in Maine.

While getting ready to go we got the informed that Aimee had birthed another child, it was good to hear and we were excited to see pictures.

We walked to the bus station and found the info we needed to get to Maine, looks like we'll have a layover in NYC so we plan to checkout the city for the day. As for city buses to take us from Delaware Water Gap to the neighboring Stroudsburg, the next wouldnt be coming for another 4 hours. So we walked the 3 miles down a sketchy highway with hardly any shoulder into town. Just as we made it to the outskirts of town, a couple of hikers who had called a shuttle from the hostel had their ride pick us up and take us to the Walmart. "Ken's AT Hiker Service", a nice old man looking to keep busy.

We resupplied on food at Walmart- enough to get us through the 100 mile wilderness in Maine. We then waited on a city bus for about an hour to drop us off at a Burger King on the other side of town so we could wait on another bus to take us back to Delaware Water Gap.

When we got back to the hostel, there were a ton of people there for the weekly Thursday night potluck dinner/hiker feed. Presbyterians are very friendly, they fed all the hikers till we were stuffed and were very chatty.

We are having a nice relaxing evening.

Day 76

Today we didnt do much. We went to the farmers market down the road and got chef salads for lunch. We walked over the Delaware River bridge into New Jersey. We hung around the hostel for a few hours and did nothing. We also went to the motel up the road to do laundry.

We ended up staying at the hostel for another night rather than getting a hotel room. There is a NASCAR race in Pocono (the town over) so all the hotels have doubled their prices. Tomorrow morning we're walking to the bus station to get a ride into NYC to embark on another adventure.

Day 77

Our bus out of Delaware Water Gap left at 10:30 am, we were in New York City by 12. Our bus for Maine doesnt leave out of NYC until 4am tomorrow, so we had alot of time to kill.

We did more wandering around than anything today. We attempted to take the subway to the 9/11 memorial, but due to construction on the route that takes you right to it, we would have had to transfered 2 or 3 times. We didnt want to get totally lost and were getting cranky so we rode the subway back to Times Square and got lunch.

We saw 3 or 4 other thru hikers in the city, 3 of them we knew. They're easy to spot, but tot the regular person we probably look homeless. We had people asking us for directions multiple times today, I guess we look like we know what we're doing, or look like your average local bum, we let them know we didnt have a clue.

We're now waiting on our bus to take us to Maine, 15 hour bus ride with a layover in Boston. 4am seems like a long ways away.

Day 78

We ended up not sleeping at all at the bus station. I took the opportunity to catch up on my blog and Cathrine watched all the crazy people who came through the bus station. Once on the bus Cathrine and I did manage to close our eyes for about an hour on the way to Boston.

We had an hour layover in Boston where we got on the bus that would take us to Bangor Maine. That ride went by surprisingly fast and we had one more 1.5 hours layover in Bangor to wait on the bus that would take us to Medway.

Once in Medway, we met up with the owner of the Appalachian Trail Lodge Hostel with whom I arranged a shuttle to pick us up and take us to the hostel. He's a good guy and gave Cathrine and I a honeymoon special!

This is one of the nicest places we've stayed in yet with very reasonable prices. We got 2 nights so that we could recoup from our bus trip. One more zero tomorrow, then from here we're taking a shuttle to Baxter State Park where we will summit the Mighty Mt. Katahdin

Day 79

We slept until 12 today, the first time we've slept past 9 in a really really long time. We needed it.

We pretty much hung around the hostel today. I sewed up a hole in my pants and bandana and we finally got caught up on the blog posts. Millinocket is a cool, quiet town.

We're getting up at 5am tomorrow so we can go get breakfast at a restaurant down the street thats owned by the same guy who runs the hostel and catch the 6:30 shuttle to Baxter State Park. We are very excited
